Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name, 39-76

The second assigned reading was not quite as interesting as the first. She talked mostly about pastimes, which wasn’t boring, but it wasn’t very interesting. It just seemed like she was rambling on about random stories about her mom. I did find it sad how her mom left once Clarissa was late to the meeting place at the mall. Once I was done reading that section of the book, I looked back at the title because I had forgotten. There was an obvious connection between the section and the section title. “Because I was Late” is the section title. Once I read that, I got the feeling that she blamed herself for her mother leaving. That made even more sense once I started pondering over it.

She obviously is troubled about a lot of things in her life, and maybe it started with her mother leaving. Had she just been on time, maybe her mother wouldn’t have left. I doubt that is true, but that could have been her mindset at the time and even as a grown adult.

I found it to be weird how she got angry at herself for being angry that she might be sharing her train compartment with men. Even though she didn’t end up having to share it with the two men, I still found it odd. It seemed like she was punishing herself. I understand being upset if she actually did have to share it with the men, but I’d feel silly or relieved to find out I don’t have to share the compartment. It made me think that maybe she’s a bitter or angry person in general, maybe the most bitter and angry towards herself.

Overall I enjoyed this section. I read on into the following section where she meets her dad. I stopped before I found out whether he actually knew that she was his daughter or not. I’m actually very excited to find out what she says and how she tells him that she is his daughter. I’m also excited to find out whether he knows or not and the reaction he has if he doesn’t.

I am guessing that you enjoyed the 3rd reading much more than the second? I know that I tended to like it more because it was in the 'now,' telling what she was experiencing immediately, and also giving more indication of why certain people have done certain things.

We'll have to see where it goes. I can only imagine. Thanks for your comments in last class. Don't hesitate to belt it out, if you feel the need.
